Microdermabrasion is the use of tiny crystals on the tip of a wand-like tool that is massaged over the skin in order to produce the desired exfoliation effect. Microdermabrasion can be performed on any skin type and is effective at improving the skin tone and reducing the visibility of brown spots (like sun spots, age spots, and hyperpigmentation caused by hormonal changes) – all with no down time.
A microdermabrasion facial is a multi-step process designed to cleanse the skin while enhancing the benefits of a traditional facial.

Cleansing
The process begins with a gentle cleanse to wash the face of makeup and surface level grime. Cleansing also opens the pores for proper exfoliation and extractions while preparing the face for a full skin analysis.
Skin Analysis
Your medical esthetician will review your skin to ensure microdermabrasion is right for you or if another exfoliation process, like a chemical peel, may provide more ideal results. The skin analysis will also help them determine which facial mask and products to implement during the process and provide them with the information they need to educate you on the proper continuing care of your skin.
Microdermabrasion Exfoliation
The microdermabrasion wand is used by massing it over your skin with a cleansing gel to help break down and slough away dead skin cells while penetrating into the pore to remove build up. Upon completion, your pores are more open to accepting the facial mask and allowing the ingredients to get to work.
Facial Mask
Depending on your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, combination, or acne prone) your esthetician will select a facial mask to apply and massage onto your skin. The mask used will target your problem areas and concerns. For example, for oily skin it will target excess sebum production while for dry skin, it will contain additional moisturizing and calming ingredients.

After Care and Results
Following your microdermabrasion facial, your esthetician will provide you with continuing care instructions and recommendations of products that are best to use for your skin type and concerns. Following a microdermabrasion facial, you can expect your skin to be more tender and possibly pinkish in tone for those with lighter skin. This should pass within a day and is only the new layer of skin being exposed for the first time to the elements. There is no recovery downtime required and you can resume normal activity following treatment; however, sunscreen should be applied before going outside and time in the sun should be limited to allow time for your fresh new skin to adjust.
Following your microdermabrasion facial, you can expect visible results such as:
- Brighter and more even skin tone
- Reduced visibility of light to mild acne scaring
- Repair from sun damage
- Dark spots reduced or eliminated
- Smoother skin texture
- Reduced breakouts
